Exhibition from November 20 to December 2009In the eighties, the Danish artist exhibited his paintings worldwide. From Copenhagen to London, from Amsteram to San Francisco. His paintings were sold for exorbitant prices to renowed international art dealers, galleries and auction houses.Late eighties, all became a little quiet for Finn Pederson, due to personal circumstances. But still, the expressive paintings of this fascinating artist are enchanting. First intrigued with his purely poetic color explosions and also with more traditional images of masks, which float like planets through an area of shimmering color and fiery flashes. Gradually Pedersen is back in the picture.Finn Pedersen lives in Scandinavia and works in his studio driven to create colorful paintings. With powerful moves he brings the paint on the canvas. He used the spatula, fingers or let the contents of the tube on the canvas in thick streams flow. Pedersen braid the colors together, let them run around each other. The duplicate the mysterious and unexpected new relationships. It is this artist of the highest importance that every color remains clear and pure. It may not be messy, no mixing of colors. For Pedersen, each color is good enough of themselves. Colors should complement each other. They each have new energy. Like the single notes in a melody in which each note is its own important role.Pedersen's paintings are recognizable and enigmatic. Recognizable, because they do at first sight reminiscent of the boisterous aggressiveness of the Cobra artists' movement during the years 1948-1951. The founders were fond of expressive colorful exaggerations. Puzzling, because the painting plays with the spectator. As in a dream the picture changes continuously in the painting. The most beautiful is malformed. Enthusiasm is united in horror, sure to delight, eternity with transience.Pedersen tries in his paintings to express the images stored in his memory. He paints himself as he says "his experience". He adds:"I get in my daily life impuleses everywhere. It may be something that I see in the street. In a magazine, a newspaper or something on television that I hear. My paintings are a kind of reflection of my experience."He doesn't try to escape from the harsh realities of life to hide in a colorful universe. The frequent use of masks in his paintings is remarkable. For Pederson masks are an important part of human rituals. The express hope, fear, desire and hardness thoughts. With masks, you can create an illusion and something or someone else than in your everyday life. The mask is a dream role or a frightening figure. Teh mask also reminds the artist of the chaos of creation. A giant, icy cold and darkness, which gradually turns into a planet with plants. First sign of life was found in the sea, and one day human being appears. Each painting is a creation in itself. It grows when you look at it.

Due to the historical chances, Wuhan in Hubei has become one of the original places of Chinese contemporary art and cultural elite movements in 1980s when many artists and fine arts theorists of great importance appear. Imperceptibly influenced by the history, art development of Hubei province is accompanied by glorious history. The glorious history is worth remembering, and the thoughts and creation on history will go on.
In fact, many artists create in the middle years of 1980s through independent thinking and historical image resources before the reform and opening up. The phenomenon lasts till 1990s and a considerable amount of artists are involved. It is worth being approved that many artists, based on independent and serious thinking, re-read and look back at history with plentiful image symbols embodying historical memories, and reach the goal of reflecting the past and influencing the present. This way of narration needs to be seriously faced.
“Historical Image—2009 Chinese Invitational Exhibition of Contemporary Art”, held by Shenzhen Art Museum and Hubei Museum of Art, has invited excellent artists nationwide to create works on the topic of historical image, in hope of attracting wide and in-depth attention on this artistic phenomenon from academic circles during the tour exhibition. We have noticed that some of the participant artists are from Hubei, thus we hope the cooperation and exchange with Shenzhen Art Museum will be beneficial to the development of Hubei contemporary art.

Since the mid-1990s, there has been a tendency in Chinese contemporary art to borrow the image symbols from Red Classics and make a mixture in the artistic concept of post-modernism. Although artists differ from each other in style and issue, they lay emphasis on the reflection on history and concern for future. Moreover, this kind of works profoundly gives prominence to the position of Chinese standard in terms of both social culture and artistic creation. Obviously, it would be beneficial to the development of Chinese contemporary art. Based on the above, we hold this tour exhibition to show the works in different galleries in hope of attracting the academic circles’ attention on the tendency of creation.
After the “Ideational Image - 2002 Chinese Invitational Exhibition of Contemporary Oil Painting”, Shenzhen Art Museum hold another five Chinese Invitational Exhibitions of Contemporary Oil Painting “Graphical Image”, “Playful Image”, “Mirror Image”, etc. in succession. The six exhibitions primarily put images in order in academic context, highlight the cultural token, namely reveal the changes of idea and technique of creation in era of image, and also show people’s living circumstance and actual concern. This is the logical train of thought of this exhibition.
To continue this topic, “Historical Image 2009 Chinese Invitational Exhibition of Contemporary Art” invites excellent artists nationwide to create works on the topic of historical image. In spite of the limitation of the topic, the polysemia of image expression, reflection and connotation behind the image, and different forms of artistic expression will bring us special artistic experiences and spiritual exchanges.

Vulgair noemt hij ze: ‘The fatties are busy with pleasing the vulgarity’. Naast deze geschilderde figuren zijn op de doeken vaak korte teksten als ‘Basically I’m OK’ of ‘How can you not love me’ te lezen.

It is remarkable that each of the paintings in this series by Liu Yujun contains images of a blue liquid in a variety of forms. This images seem to be abrupt as there is no logical or semantic connection with the other images in the paintings whatsoever. We furthermore find that Liu Yujun has changed the blue liquid into an ‘unidentified liquid’ to name these paintings, which mainly deal with Chinese women, and thus avoids the important to a certain extent and dwells on the trivial. Perhaps this is exactly where the problem lies. By calling the blue liquid ‘unidentified liquid’ and by using this name as the theme of this series of paintings even though this liquid does not dominate the works, Liu Yujun went beyond merely painting ‘beautiful women’.
Liu Yujun illustrated this point in A Painter’s Oral Account: ‘here, the blue liquid symbolises a sense of insecurity’. If we look at the semantic and aesthetic relationship between different images in this series of paintings in a comprehensive manner, we find that this liquid, regarded as the central theme by Liu Yujun, indeed plays an important role in determining the aesthetic importance and meaning of the paintings. This is because from an aesthetic point of view the blue liquid, suddenly appearing out of nowhere, gives the static representation vitality and vigour. The meaning of the enigmatic blue liquid seems to be mysterious and ambiguous, all the more because this liquid has no connection with the images of beautiful women whatsoever. Perhaps it is exactly this indescribable meaning that makes Liu Yujun see the blue liquid as a symbol of insecurity.
In my view, however, the blue liquid appearing in the paintings or on the faces and bodies of the beautiful women is essentially negative in meaning. The argument of Liu Yujun is only one viewpoint out of many negative meanings. This is because if we have a look at these numerous negative meanings we doubtless discover landscapes that are not as beautiful as the ‘beautiful women’ in these works. Perhaps the reality is exactly the opposite. The negative interpretations embodied in the series Unidentified Liquid precisely originate from the negation of beauty and result in different forms of denial of modern society and culture. This is in my view the real meaning of the series Unidentified Liquid and it is also a point of special importance and distinctive value in contemporary art.
